TLC THE BIG PICTURE
PROJECT
THE PROJECT
In September 2024, TLC embarked on an initiative to develop independent, science-based catchment plans for the 17 sub-catchments of the Tukituki River.
The six-month project, TLC The Big Picture, consolidates comprehensive, evidence-based data to identify critical environmental challenges specific to each sub-catchment whilst also identifying practical, cost-effective solutions.
The project adopts a multi-faceted research approach, combining field investigations, insights from local farmers, and an in-depth analysis of existing studies and data on the Tukituki catchment.
In December 2024, TLC hosted workshops in each Tukituki sub-catchment for local farmers and growers. These sessions offered a chance to review the scientific findings and help refine the actions proposed for each area. Local voice was crucial to making sure the solutions align with the realities of farming and growing in each sub-catchment.
By contributing to this process, local farmers helped TLC to create tailored one-page work plans for each sub-catchment. These plans will not impose rules or regulations but will give farmers and catchment groups a roadmap for future planning to improve water quality, boost farm productivity, and open the door to future funding opportunities.

Environmental planning consultancy Environment, Innovation and Strategy Ltd (EIS), led by co-director Matt Highway, is managing the project. Matt has worked in catchment, biodiversity and land management for over 20 years with regional council and for the primary sector.
"Operating at this scale is a fantastic opportunity to develop meaningful, community-driven solutions. Our goal is to dig deep into the issues and help farmers identify where they can make the biggest bang for their buck", Matt Highway, director at EIS.

“We’re tackling the big issues sub-catchment by sub-catchment, with the aim of piecing together the bigger picture".
